When I first saw the Sunday reading, “Lest he comes suddenly and finds you asleep”,
I had a funny thought that said the Insomniacs have an advantage!
But in all seriousness, “Take heed, watch and pray for you do not know when the time will come” has apocalyptic undertones. It hints that we do not know when is the end. Possibly the end of our times, our humanity, or simply our own lives.
The reading goes on to say “Watch therefore-for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening , or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or in the morning- lest he come suddenly and find you asleep.”
The message is pretty clear in this parable for our souls to be on our guard. Our lives will come to an end, and we’ll need to present an account for it.
But what struck me about this passage is also that it begins by saying “it is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to be on watch”.
God left us here on a mission, to do something before he returns for us. But I fear, many of us including myself live like we’re the masters of our own destiny. With FOMO and YOLO mindsets, who is the master in this relationship?
Indeed, we’ll need to watch and pray as Jesus entreats us to.
