Embracing faith and trust

In this Sunday’s Gospel, we witness a profound encounter between Mary and Elizabeth, both pregnant and filled with the Holy Spirit. Elizabeth’s joyful recognition of Mary as the mother of her Lord highlights the importance of faith.

Do I believe in the importance of Mary in my faith life? This is the question I often find myself turning to when I come upon Gospels relating to Mary. If she were not an important figure, 2000 years of theology would have dropped her from the narrative. Instead, she looms big as ever in our faith teachings.

Elizabeth declares, “Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill His promises”, reminding us that true blessings stem from our faith in God’s word.

This passage encourages us to embrace our own faith journeys, recognizing that God’s presence brings joy and fulfilment, even amid uncertainty. Like Mary and Elizabeth, we are called to trust in God’s promises and share His love with others.

We are also reminded that God may not need us to do big things. Mary was just being herself, a mother, a model and Saint.

This Sunday let us reflect on our own calling and tell the Lord “Thy will be done”.
