Last Sunday James received his First Holy Communion. After the mass whilst we were walking away from the main hall, a little girl ran up to him to hand him a registration form for the altar servers.
It has crossed my mind in the weeks leading up to this that he could start service now, and the priest did mention it during the mass, but I didn’t want it to be my decision. So without me making any move, the invite was given.
He didn’t say much about it and after a few days I asked him what he thought and he said he’s thinking about it.
Last night before he went to bed, he told me he wanted to sign-up to be an altar server. I said I’ll support him wholeheartedly and I was pleasantly surprised that he made a decision on it.
This morning when I awoke, the Gospel reading struck me because it was Matthew 20:20-28 – “The mother of the sons of Zebedee came to Jesus with a request…and Jesus answered ‘Can you drink the cup that I am going to drink?’ They replied ‘We can.’ ‘”
Am flabbergasted because James was named after the Zebedee disciple. And the message was about accepting the challenge.
New beginnings indeed.

Update : On Saturday evening, we went to drop the registration form into the mailbox in Church and just then, Fr. Richards walked by. He said “Well done!” Little did I know, the mass was to celebrate his 25th anniversary of being a priest. Sounds like a virtuous cycle to me.
