This is the first Sunday in Lent and the Gospel tells us that the Spirit drove Jesus into the desert for forty days before he began his ministry that would eventually lead him to death and resurrection.
Similarly for us, we need to use these forty days of Lent to go deep into the inner deserts of our hearts. Strip away all the bells and whistles about ourselves and reflect on who we truly are.
Are we pleasing to God? If not, in what ways have we failed? Let’s take these forty days to work on the stuff we know is keeping us away from God. Maybe we spend too much time online? Maybe we’re obsessed with certain hobbies? Or we don’t respect certain people around us.
Let’s give ourselves this forty days of Lent to work at it. And hopefully come out of it as a better person. And we can then truly celebrate our new lives at Easter.
